Exclusive interview with the Australian singer-songwriter Magnets

Siobhan O'Howvery Irish, known as Magnets, is an Australian singer from the city of Melbourne, fan of the popular television series Game of Thrones. She started to play piano at the age of 6; thank to her grandfather who gave her the very first musical keyboard when she was a little girl. Among her main influences are Sting, Cold Play, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Enya and others. Audiologist by profession, now she delights us with her music. After listening to one of her songs, which is dedicated to one of The Game of thrones Romances, we decided to get in touch with her, and that's how this interview flowed.

We are happy to share words with you, Magnets.

Special Thanks to Maria Mathers and Greg Holland for the beautiful Magazine Cover of this Month.

1.-Is Fight a reaction based on your own experiences or someone else's?

A bit of both. I used to learn karate and was inspired by the strength in women I’d see around me. The song is about fighting back for your self-worth, and I think most people can relate to that.

2.-In Fight you mention Superman and in the video of Lonely you wear a shirt of the same character. Do you have any particular taste for America's superhero?

Wow, you’ve got a great eye for detail! I do enjoy the occasional superhero movie, but hadn’t linked the two references together – well done.

3.-‘’Dear ‘’ tells us the story of two characters that are very different, like Ice and Fire. Did you get inspired by Jon Snow and Daenerys who are the representation of both elements?

In part, yes! And also by my own relationship. As the saying goes, opposites often attract, and I certainly find that to be true. I relate to how Jon Snow’s ice can calm Daenerys intensity. They’re meant to be.

4.-We know you are a fan of Game of Thrones. What is your prediction of the end of the series? Do you think Jon Snow and Daenerys will end happily ever after as a Disney Story?

I actually think we’ll lose Dany before the end of the series, I’d be very surprised if she survived. I just can’t see Martin giving us that ending. I think he’s much more one to set us up for a major sacrificial ending of sorts.

5.-What is your favorite Game of Thrones character?

Oooh, probably Ghost. Who doesn’t love a loyal fluffy wolf? I’ll have one please.

The wolf of Jon Snow is the favorite character of Magnets

6.-Andy Gibb, Kylie Minogue, John Paul Young, Olivia Newton-John are some of the most recognized Australian singers worldwide. Would you like to emulate the role of one of them in the music industry?

Kylie Minoque, yes please. I enjoy the absolute glitz and glamour of her on stage. She embraces the performance and knows how to create a party. I’d love to be able to do that.

7.-Have you ever planned to enter into the music market in USA?

I think a lot of Australian musicians dream of making it in the USA, but for independent artists, that can be really difficult. For now, I’m going to focus on one song at a time, and keep trying my best to create great music.

8.-Since when and how did you notice your passion and love for music?

Always. I’ve always loved music, since I was a little girl. I think I wrote my first song when I was 11 years old and shared it with my family. I haven’t stopped writing since.

9.-Are you working with any label at the moment?

Not at present, I’m an independent artist.

10.-Which singers inspire you to be better in your career? Would you like to collaborate with any of them? Who?

I’ve turned to so many artists over the years. Right now I’m in love with St Vincent, Robyn and a band called Alvvays. If I could ever work with either, I’d be over the moon.

11.-Are you 100% into music or do you have any other facet?

I do! I’m an audiologist, and currently working on my PhD. I’m researching how to prevent hearing loss in musicians. I also run Musicians 4 Hearing, an organisation that uses music events to fund hearing care in the developing world. My whole life is about music, both creating it and helping people hear it.

12.-Since when do you dedicate yourself to music?

About a year ago now, I committed to making Magnets and giving it a go. I haven’t looked back since. I’m continually excited and grateful for any opportunity that may come from it.

13.-What was the first song you sang? Did you do any cover?

The first song I remember really singing, was Vincent (a cover). There’s one note in it that always gets me – it’s heart breaking.

14.-Was there someone who pushed you to get into the musical world?

My grandfather bought me a keyboard when I was just a little girl, so I guess I have him to thank for my passion.

15.-Have you been to another country as a singer?

Not yet, but I’d love to.

16.-What is you favorite song to belt out at the bar/in the car/for karaoke?

To be honest, probably Enya. I once got so into it at Karaoke, I chipped my front tooth on the microphone.

17.-What are the five things you can’t live without?

Headphones, a notepad, a pen, my guitar and Cheezles (a type of chip).

18.-What’s your motto or the advice you live by?

Happiness is everything, protect it.

19.-Most of our followers speak spanish, Would you like to make music in spanish?

Yes, but I’d need a very patient translator to help me.

20.-One last question; Would you like to leave some words to our followers?

Just thanks for reading and listening to my music!

Here we leave something of his musical repertoire:

The Testament of Ann Lee'

Me sentí tan libre".
